Data center operators are trying to move towards energy efficient data centers, to minimize data center’s power consumption and carbon emission.

In a reported posted by Nation World, studies have shown that data center energy consumption is increasing annually and that “mainstream legacy corporate data centers remain major consumers of electricity”. The same study also commented that “traditional data center operators are typically concerned with maximizing output and performance, often ignoring the power implications”.

Optimize data center cooling with Eaton iCube

Here are two ways that Eaton’s iCube can help with energy savings at data centers.

Eaton iCube comes with pre-designed Hot/Cold Aisle to optimize thermal management and eliminates cooling loss

Hot aisle/cold aisle arrangements lower cooling costs by better managing airflow, thereby accommodating lower fan speeds, reduces fan energy and thereby saving costs.  

The Eaton iCube is designed as a closed design of cold and hot aisles.  This help reduce cooling loss, improves air-conditioning efficiency and noise levels.

The front door of the Eaton iCube cabinet is made of tempered glass and the rear door is made of sheet metal to meet isolation and closure requirements for the cold and hot aisles.

Temperature and humidity parameters can be easily checked with the display screen.  Users can look at the temperature and humidity in the cold aisle and hot aisle of each cabinet.

Additional ways of energy efficiency with Eaton iCube

According to The Green Grid, the assessment method of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) has become an international standard for measuring energy efficiency and is widely used in the design and operation of data centers. PUE is defined as the total facility power over IT Equipment Power.   PUE is important for Data Centers to understand how energy is used at the Data Centers.

An ideal PUE would be 1.0

Data centers would save electricity bills with PUE as low as 1.20.  The Eaton iCube Micro Data Center has a PUE of 1.35 and can contribute to the data center average annual power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratio.

Eaton iCube comes with in-rack cooling system to cool the heat source closely and directly

In one of the articles from the Energy Star website, data centers are recommended to install in-rack or in-row cooling.

  • These systems bring cold air closer to (or directly to) servers
  • Can use 3 times less energy in high-energy density server rack than conventional cooling systems

Eaton iCube is fitted with in-rack air conditioners.   This means the cooling system is set closest to the heat source and air is circulated quickly due to proximity. This will result in energy-savings due to its efficient performance.  The in-rack air conditioners are easy to install and easily expandable.  There are configurations that the user can choose which comes with cooling system shipped as part of the unit.  In this case, the user only need to connect the power cord and drainpipe on site.   There will be no steps required to connect indoor and outdoor unit copper pipes with the Eaton iCube standard single cabinet configuration with integrated air conditioning.  Post deployment, the in-rack air conditioners can be maintained easily and replaced if needed.  Eaton provides an operation display screen with the iCube and this makes the control of the cooling system easy.  Users can monitor return air temperature, return air humidity, supply air temperature, supply air humidity and air conditioner operating status.   This can help guide the data center operators to attain their green goals and achieve more accurate results.

Rack-oriented cooling allows cooling capacity and redundancy to be targeted to the actual needs of specific racks of servers. This helps avoid the risk of local hot spots, making this mode of cooling more energy efficient.

Rack and row-based cooling costs is known to be lower than room-based cooling costs. 

Eaton iCube standard single cabinet configuration with integrated air conditioning is suitable for commercial office buildings and other areas where it is difficult to install the outdoor air conditioning unit. 

Questions to consider whilst planning to go green

Here are some questions to consider if you are planning specific moves to green data center with less power consumption and carbon release

  1. Is the data center that you are managing filled with older servers and older network communication equipment?  Is it time to move to newer equipment with better efficiency?
  2. Is the cooling systems of the data center optimized for energy consumption?
  3. Is the monitoring platform that the data center operators use able to monitor effectively the goals set to move to green?
