Protecting what matters

What is a surge?

A surge is a short burst of high-voltage electrical energy running through your home’s wiring. Just one surge can potentially damage anything plugged into an unprotected electrical outlet, like electronics and appliances. It can also fry smart home applications — like security devices, programmable lighting and climate control systems — and potentially cause fires.

Where do surges come from?

Surges can be generated inside and outside the home.

External surges

  • Downed or damaged utility lines
  • Indirect lightning*
  • Utility grid transfers
  • Widespread power outages

Internal surges – motors turning on/off

  • Refrigerators
  • Dryers
  • Garage door openers
  • AC units – compressors
  • HVAC – fans
  • Shop tools – miter saws, air compressors, etc.

*Surge protective devices do not safeguard equipment against direct lightning strikes

What can you afford to lose?

Your home could have over $20,000 worth of unprotected electronics — plus sensitive electronics within smart home systems and appliances — susceptible to damaging power surges. And some items, like your desktop drive that contains digital photos and mementos, simply cannot be replaced.
